When to Come In Straight Away
Severe or worsening toothache, facial swelling, a tooth knocked out or pushed out of position, uncontrolled bleeding after an extraction, or a broken tooth with a sharp edge cutting your tongue. If swelling is spreading towards your eye or neck, or you are having difficulty breathing or swallowing, go to a hospital emergency department immediately rather than waiting for a dental appointment.

Severe Toothache
Diagnosis of what is actually causing it, then relief — usually by treating the nerve rather than only prescribing painkillers.
Dental Abscess & Swelling
Drainage, infection control and a plan to deal with the underlying cause so it does not recur.
Broken or Knocked-Out Teeth
Time-critical. A knocked-out adult tooth replanted within the hour has a real chance of surviving.
Lost Filling or Crown
Recementing or a temporary restoration to protect the tooth and stop the sensitivity.
What To Do In the First Fifteen Minutes
For a knocked-out adult tooth: pick it up by the crown, never the root. If dirty, rinse briefly in milk or saline — not water, and do not scrub. Then either slot it back into the socket and bite gently on a clean cloth, or keep it in a cup of milk and come straight in. For swelling or pain, ordinary pain relief is fine; do not hold aspirin against the gum, which burns the tissue.
