How Often Should You Actually Visit the Dentist?
The “every six months” rule is a good default — but it’s not the whole story. The right interval depends on your gums, your habits and your history. Here’s how we actually decide it.
Why six months is the default
Plaque hardens into tartar within weeks, and tartar can’t be brushed off — only professionally removed. Six-monthly visits keep tartar from ever getting a long run at your gums, and they catch cavities while they’re small, paintless fixes rather than root canals.
Who needs to come more often
- Gum disease patients — typically every 3–4 months until stable.
- Smokers and tobacco users — higher gum-disease and oral-cancer risk; screening matters.
- Diabetics — gum health and blood sugar affect each other in both directions.
- Pregnant women — hormonal changes inflame gums; a mid-pregnancy check is wise.
- Braces and aligner wearers — hardware traps plaque; cleanings keep treatment on track.
Meanwhile, patients with excellent home care and years of clean visits may safely stretch toward annual visits — we’ll tell you honestly which group you’re in.
What a check-up at our ECR clinic includes
A full examination of teeth, gums and soft tissues (including an oral cancer screen), digital X-rays only when indicated, ultrasonic scaling and polishing, and a clear conversation about anything we find — with photographs so you can see what we see. A routine visit is typically 30–45 minutes.
Indicatively, a consultation in Chennai runs a few hundred rupees to around ₹1,000, and cleaning ₹1,000–₹3,000 — confirm exact fees when you book. The comparison that matters: a filling costs a fraction of a root canal, which costs a fraction of an implant. Prevention is the cheapest dentistry there is.
The habits that do the other 363 days
Twice-daily brushing with a fluoride toothpaste, daily flossing or interdental brushes, less frequent snacking (frequency beats quantity for cavity risk), and water instead of sugary drinks. If you do those four things, your check-ups will mostly be pleasant, boring appointments — exactly as they should be.
Patient FAQs
My teeth feel fine — do I still need a check-up?
Yes. Cavities and gum disease are painless until they’re advanced. “Feeling fine” is unfortunately not evidence of dental health — early detection is the entire point of the visit.
Does scaling weaken teeth?
No — this is a persistent myth. Ultrasonic scaling removes tartar sitting on the tooth surface. Any looseness you feel afterwards was caused by the tartar’s bulk, not by its removal.
How long does a routine visit take?
Usually 30–45 minutes for an examination plus cleaning. We also offer early-morning and evening slots for working professionals, Mon–Sat 9am–10pm.
Do you see patients from Neelankarai and Palavakkam?
Yes — our Vettuvankeni clinic serves families across ECR: Neelankarai, Injambakkam, Akkarai, Palavakkam, Uthandi and Sholinganallur.
