A Parent’s Guide to Children’s Dental Care

A child’s relationship with the dentist is built in their first few visits — get those right and you’ve given them a lifetime without dental fear. Here’s what we tell every parent at our ECR clinic.

When should the first visit happen?

Earlier than most parents think: by the first birthday, or within six months of the first tooth appearing. The first visit isn’t about treatment — it’s a gentle introduction, a lap exam, and answers to your feeding, bottle and teething questions before problems start.

“They’re only milk teeth” — the myth that costs the most

Milk teeth matter enormously. They hold space for the adult teeth (losing them early causes crowding that later needs braces or aligners), they’re essential for chewing and speech development, and an abscessed milk tooth can damage the adult tooth forming underneath it. Cavities in milk teeth spread faster than in adult teeth — they need treating, not waiting out.

Preventing cavities: the practical version

  • Brush twice daily — a rice-grain smear of fluoride toothpaste under 3, a pea-size from 3+.
  • An adult brushes or supervises until about age 7–8 — small hands genuinely can’t do it well alone.
  • No bottles of milk or juice in bed — this single habit causes the severe “bottle caries” we see most.
  • Snack frequency matters more than sugar quantity — keep sweets to mealtimes.
  • Ask us about fluoride varnish and pit-and-fissure sealants — quick, painless, and they dramatically cut cavity risk in molars.

How we make visits fear-free

Our Vettuvankeni clinic has dedicated child-friendly treatment rooms, and our team is trained in child behaviour management — tell-show-do, short appointments, and never restraint or surprise. Children who start early treat the dental chair like a normal place, which is the whole idea. Read more about our pediatric dentistry, and confirm consultation fees when you book — children’s preventive visits are among the least expensive appointments in dentistry, and they prevent the expensive ones.

Patient FAQs

My child is terrified of dentists. What do you do differently?

We schedule a no-treatment familiarisation visit first: they sit in the chair, see the instruments, and nothing else happens. Treatment starts only when the child is comfortable — it nearly always works within a visit or two.

Are dental X-rays safe for children?

We use digital X-rays with very low radiation doses, and only when there’s a clinical reason — never routinely.

When do milk teeth fall out?

Typically from age 6 through 12, front teeth first. Wide variation is normal; if nothing has moved by 7, a check-up with an X-ray tells us why.

Do you offer sealants and fluoride treatments?

Yes — both are quick, painless preventive treatments we recommend for most children once their permanent molars arrive.
